COURTNEY HAD rock star status equal to Kurt’s when they first met, having cofounded the indie punk band Hole with guitarist Eric Erlandson in 1989, the same year she taught herself how to properly play guitar. Their first album, Pretty on the Inside, was released in 1991—nearly three months before Nevermind—and was named one of the year’s 20 best by Spin magazine. Here, she plays at Seattle’s Crocodile Cafe in 1993.
